Piper Tavern circa 1759. Guests included Ben Franklin, Robert Morris, George Taylor (all signers of the Declaration of Independence), Generals Lafayette and Anthony Wayne, Joseph Bonaparte (king of Spain), and Stephen Girard.
George Piper joined the Continental Army at the start of the war leaving his wife, Eva, to run the tavern. On day while she was ironing the Doans, a Loyalist gang, stormed into the inn. Eva threw her hot flatiron at one of the outlaws breaking his arm. She then grabbed her husband's sword and chased them off the property.
